Nazrul’s 120th birth anniversary celebrated at CU

120th birth anniversary of poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was celebrated on June 30 in Chittagong University BBA faculty auditorium. The program was organized by Bangla department of Chittagong University (CU) supported by Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC). The day-long ceremony included an international seminar and cultural function.

The program began at 10:40AM and it was inaugurated by Prof. Abdul Mannan, former Chairman of UGC. Speeches were delivered by Prof. Dr. A.H.M Mustafizur Rahman, Vice-Chancellor of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University as special guest and Prof. Dr. Shireen Akhter, VC (Routine Duty) of CU, as chief guest. The guests addressed the audience about the importance of Nazrul’s literary work regarding patriotism, independence, colonial oppression.

 

In her speech Dr. Shireen Akhter said, “Our national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam is a spokesman of love, rebellion, friendship and humanity. There is no branch of Bangla literature where this poet did not reach. In his lifetime, he tried to promote humanity through literature.”

She further said, ”By reading Nazrul’s poetry, young students will grow with humanity and motivational spirit for fighting against injustice.”

The international seminar was chaired by Dr. Mahbubul Haque, Ekushey Padak-winning researcher from CU’s Bangla department. Two papers were presented in the seminar by representatives from Kazi Nazrul Islam University in India, Dr. Mona Lisa Das, Department head of Bangla, and Dr. Sathi Guha, Director of Nazrul Center’s Social and Cultural Studies, on, “Kazi Nazrul Islam and world literature” and “Nazrul’s childhood and signs of communism” respectively. Then Dr. Manabendra Nath Saha, Professor of Bangla at Visva-Bharati University, presented his paper on “Nazrul in cinema”. The presentation was followed by a discussion. The discussants were Nurul Amin, Professor of CU Bangla department, Dr. Laila Zaman, Professor of CU Bangla department, and Biswajit Chowdhury, poet, fiction-writer and journalist.

 

The program ended with cultural function where Nazrul Sangeet artist Fahmida Begum sang classical Nazrul songs.
