CUCSU becomes functional again, desire all

CUCSU becomes functional again, desire all

Chittagong University Central Students Union (CUCSU) was once a vibrant name in the campus. Students took part in various extra-curricular activities through this body. They used to elect their representatives in the union through a democratic voting system. And the rights of the students were highly taken care of. But it is a decades old story now. In the course of time CUCSU has become fully dysfunctional.

The process of CUCSU election as well as its activities has been remaining suspended since 1990. Only six elections were held since CUCSU started its journey in this campus. First CUCSU election was held in 1970 while last one was held in 1990 where Nazim Uddin was elected as Vice President while Azim uddin was elected as General Secretary (GS).

Following the killing of Chhatra Oaikyo leader Farukuzzaman in a bloody clash between Bangladesh Chhatra League and Islami Chhatra Shibir in 1990 the authority shut down CUCSU and its activities.

Apprehension of violence and unrest in the campus is the only reason behind, the university authority says. But the irony is, every year, the university authority collects CUCSU fees from the students during their admission.

As there is no CUCSU body and no election, why these fees are being collected? What purposes are the money being spent? students want to know.

Students cannot raise their demands to the concerned authorities as there are no designated leadership due to non-functional CUCSU, many said.

The absence of CUCSU has contributed to rising of unhealthy students’ politics in the campus. Because of the nonappearance of elected student leaders the ruling party’s student wing tries to dominate the campus with muscle power, they claimed.

The university authority should hold CUCSU polls considering the greater interest of the students, said a senior student in the campus seeking anonymity.

He urged the student wings of the political organisations to play an active role to holding the election ignoring partisan or personal interests and conflicts.

Our miseries will be lessened if CUCSU can play its role, said most students interviewed for this report.

Former CU unit BCL President Alamgir Tipu told Porisor.com that they have talked with the Vice-Chancellor several times for CUCSU polls but did not get any response except assurance.

CU unit Chhatra Union President Drishan Pradip Chakma said for regaining democratic environment among political student bodies’ there is no alternative to an active CUCSU. To materialize student’s rights in the campus, the authority should organize CUCSU polls immediately, he added.

Samajtantrik Chhatra Front CU unit Convener Fajle Rabby said CUCSU election should be held as soon as possible as it is the hub of cultural activities of university. Due to inactiveness of CUCSU general students of the university are being deprived of cultural enrichments.

Most of the teachers of the university also emphasized on holding CUCSU election regularly.
While talking with Porisor team CU Pro VC Prof Shireen Akhter also underscored the need of CUCSU election. `But we have to create conducive atmosphere for holding CUCSU poll,’ she said.

‘For this we need help from the students’ bodies. If they can assure us that they won’t engage any violent activities centering CUCSU, we will think of holding CUCSU election soon,’ she added.
